Nancy Thrasher Becomes Frederick Rotary's First Woman President

Nancy Thrasher 49 was inducted Wednesday as the first woman president of the Rotary Club of Frederick. She leads Credit Bureau Inc. in Frederick and has been a Rotary member since 1987 when women joined. Her father John Matter remains a member and her grandfather Guy Matter founded the club and was its first president in 1921.

Frederick Rotary elects first woman president Mrs Thrasher

Mrs Thrasher said being the first woman president isn't a big deal as the club is a service organization of local business people. President-elect David Markoe noted members are excited and mentioned her granddad also served as president. The Frederick club has 200 members with nine women.

Sculptor Homer Yost Aids Freedom Statue Restoration

Homer Yost of Frederick is among six sculptors restoring the 130 year old 20 foot Freedom statue atop the U S Capitol. The 15 000 pound figure was lowered by helicopter in May and phase one repaired water caused holes and pits. They drill out corrosion holes fill with bronze plugs and will apply a patina to blend new with old. The statue, completed in 1863 by Thomas Crawford, was molded in Rome and cast in Bladensburg.

Seven year sentence for drunken driving fatal crash

In a packed Frederick County court, Randy L. Hostetter 29 of Laurel received seven years for two counts of manslaughter by automobile in the Aug 15 1992 crash on U S 40 near Myersville that killed Wayne B Hinkle 24 and Terry W Fields 26. Judge Mary Ann Stepler also suspended three years and ordered 400 hours community service. Hinkle a Myersville volunteer fire captain and Fields Hostetter s best friend were killed when his 1992 Pontiac Trans Am fled at 119 mph with headlights off striking Hinkle s car crossing Md 17 at 2 10 am. The sentence follows pleas for tough penalties and messages against drunken driving.

Democrats weigh runs against Bartlett in Western Maryland

Outdoor school and science budget gains survive cuts

Frederick County boards approve a 1994 operating budget funding outdoor school at nearly 450000 and science curriculum revamp at 200000. Outdoor school loses two staff positions while science funding is cut by two thirds. the director expects enrollment to rise to 4624 sixth and eighth graders and 1221 fifth graders.

Urbana High School Receives Funding in 1984 Budget

Frederick County Board of Education approved a 1984 capital budget funding Urbana High School among 21 construction projects. The district plans to spend over 26 million on construction and renovations this year, up from about 20 million last year, as enrollment grows by roughly 1,300 students annually. The board also earmarked 450,000 for portable classrooms and relocations due to space shortfalls.
