Bar Association votes for constitutional convention

The Maryland State Bar Association voted 2 to 1 to call a convention to revise the state constitution at its summer meeting in Atlantic City. A minority report favored by Judge Eli Frank of Baltimore was adopted 71 to 39 after originally being opposed 8 to 3 by the committee. The group also heard Chief Judge Ogle Marbury propose reforms for the Maryland Court of Appeals, including a seven member bench and abolition of the Orphans Court. The association set up a committee to study these ideas. It endorsed a 50 percent pension increase for judges and adopted positions on health insurance and genocide treaty issues.
