Return of anadromous spawners part 1 Maryland’s Fish Passage program
Maryland's Fish Passage program highlights barriers blocking anadromous and semi-anadromous runs in the Chesapeake Bay. American shad, river herring, and white and yellow perch once surged through tributaries but declines, pollution, silting, overharvesting, and barriers have reduced landings by up to 90 percent. Jay O'Dell leads the effort, tracing barriers from culverts to hydroelectric dams across Maryland's Western Shore and upper Bay tributaries.

Maryland Fish Passage Effort Opens Spawning Routes
O'Dell and team surveyed Maryland streams for anadromous species barriers and spawning runs. They logged over 1,000 barrier sites, advanced liming to offset acid rain, and coordinated a Bay program targeting 26 barriers for removal or permanent fish passage devices by 1992, with a broader aim to restore habitat and boost fishing and ecological health.
