Mount Airy growth outpacing 1985 projections
Mount Airy’s population, by end 1978, already surpassed 1985 projections. From 1970 to 1976 housing added rapidly with apartments doubling and single family homes rising slowly. The study notes 500+ acres added for future land, 310 housing units approved, 260 pending, and potential for 6,000 new residents in the greater Mount Airy area, including nearby parcels outside the town.
