Carroll County group seeks vote on school integration
More than 50 Carroll County residents joined 1000 petitioners from across Maryland in Annapolis to urge lawmakers to let voters decide on segregated or integrated schools. Harry E. Cooney cited state rights and urged bills allowing a November 1958 referendum, with counties voting separately if approved. The push included petitions, meetings with legislators, and plans to introduce bills to exempt certain students and teachers from integrated schools.

Senate Votes For Two Year Labor Racketeering Probe
The Senate approved a two year long inquiry costing about 350,000 to probe alleged racketeering in labor management relations. A bipartisan eight member committee with broad authority will investigate improper practices by individuals or groups in labor management. Senator McClellan is expected to lead the probe and warned the cost may rise. The plan follows disputes over jurisdiction between the Labor Committee and McClellan subcommittee as Teamsters officials refused to testify.
