Sideling Hill Creek Acreage Protects Rare Maryland Habitat
The Nature Conservancy of Maryland bought 161 acres near Sideling Creek in Washington County to shield its pristine ecosystem from development. The donation preserves Olympia marble butterflies, 12 rare plants, and the world’s healthiest population of the endangered harperella aquatic wildflower in the creek bed as part a $10 million Campaign for the Chesapeake Rivers. The buyers, Mary and Thomas Creek, sold the land to the conservancy while keeping a house and outbuildings.
