Fifty Years Ago Items From The Columns Of The News Jan 30 1962
Fifty years ago items note the demolition of an East Patrick street skating rink bought by George Wm. Smith to supply timber for a Frederick area F and M Electric Railway car barn. The rink site, once a tanyard on Kunkel estate, hosted festivals and served as the armory of the Frederick Riflemen before storage and later decline of roller skating. A hastily convened Charity Organization Society meeting appealed for urgent funds for numerous worthy cases. A reader letter argues against tolls on Sunday turnpikes. The Mayor and Aldermen toured Cumberland to review the municipal light plant and noted Frederick spends more on coal to run its plant.
