Draft law committee weighs WWII veterans with brief service

Washington January 26 The House Armed Services Committee examined a draft proposal touching World War II veterans with short service and those who did not serve overseas. Chairman Vinson questioned automatic deferments for 90 days service while others drafted would serve longer. The panel urged the Defense Department to propose refinements by Monday, amid debate over lowering age limits and expanding universal military service. 36,000 are eligible. The hearing included remarks by Maj Gen Hershey and Mrs Rogenders, with estimates of 50,000 possible cases for limited service and bold reinterpretation of mental and physical standards. The session contrasted with administration-backed manpower legislation extending service and lowering the draft age, while reviewing medical deferrals and potential reclassification of 4-Fs.
