Maryland shield law bill endorsed by press groups
A proposed broadening of Maryland’s shield law to bar disclosure of unpublished information gathered by reporters drew support from The Washington Post and state press groups but faced opposition from prosecutors. Critics warned the measure could overreach, likening it to an open archive that shields sources too broadly, a concern tied to a Washington Post investigation into sexual abuse at a Prince George’s County detention center. The bill follows a court ruling that shield protections lapse when a reporter names sources. lawmakers, including Sen. Mike Miller Jr., insist the law must cover that gap without hampering grand juries.
