Poultry Farmers Seek More Help to Survive Epidemic
Pennsylvania poultry farmers tell Senate panel they cannot endure the avian flu crisis without higher indemnities from the Agriculture Department. Budget limitsanchor compensation to replacement value, eroding future income. Since Nov. 9, 253 flocks have been culled in south central Pennsylvania, with a broader slaughter plan expanding to Maryland and Virginia. The USDA has spent over $25 million to cull nearly 10 million birds. indemnities average $1.83 per bird, while total program funding reaches $61 million. Farmers warn major losses threaten farms, workers, and rural businesses. Senator Heinz echoed the concern that farmers cannot be allowed to disappear. Pennsylvania officials say hundreds of state farmers are already out of business.
