Parrot Saves Home as Fire Damages House
A squawking macaw belonging to Mr and Mrs Bert Moler alerted residents early this morning after a fire damaged a northern North Market street home. Firefighters say a short circuit started the blaze, which cost about 5000 dollars in damage. The bird suffocated attempting to rescue its owners from smoke, prompting the Molers to mourn the pet more than the fire. Fire crews saved furniture and cleared smoke from the house. The Molers had only purchased the bird three weeks prior from an East Patrick street shop.

Fined For Fraudulent Benefit Claim
The Department of Employment Security opened a round of cases on overpayment fraud. Robert L. Smith, 29, of East Third Street, was fined 100 for collecting unemployment checks while employed in March 1960. Smith had claimed benefits for at least ten years amid $82 in overpayments. He attributed confusion over the payment system and claimed no knowledge of discrepancies until late. The case highlighted the need to remind claimants to report earnings beyond the allotted amounts. Also noted were related hearings for Lewis Gibson, convicted of attempted theft from a car, who waived preliminary hearings on false pretense and forgery charges, and faced a jury trial on a petty larceny charge.
