President approved H Smith Woolley a former Mormon bishop as agssayer of the Mint at Boise City Idaho after political controversy. A White House conference with Secretary Shaw and Senator Heyburn reviewed charges by Boise City editors. commission findings were inconclusive but did not prompt a rejection. The decision followed deliberation on political bias and news of nonreappointment.
The chief justice of the United States announces a three week recess for the Supreme Court. The comptroller of the currency has issued a call for the condition of national banks at the close of business January 22.
Pittsburg reports a gas explosion at the Marwick mine of Allegheny Coal Company in Cheswick. Between 180 and 190 men are believed dead. only one worker pulled to surface in the initial rescue. Rescue efforts found Selwyn M. Taylor dead, with 50 to 75 miners alive but unconscious in room B.

Findings blame fire caused by drapery near an arc light and cite violations of fireproofing, fire apparatus, and building ordinances.

Otto Berg er, former treasurer of the Musical Union of Baltimore, was convicted by a jury in the criminal court of embezzling 4000 dollars of the union funds. He served as treasurer from 1896 to 1901 then absconded, later arrested at Joliet, Illinois, and brought back to Maryland on a requisition. London rumor says cabinet resignations may occur, with names including Lansdowne Londonderry and Gerald Balfour.
