A separate report details a Chinese-identified body found in a refrigerator car in St Louis, linked to an unresolved smuggling case.
Mrs Cath erine Bechtel 60 and mother of 12 testified in Allentown Pa on January 22 she sworn Mabel Eckstein was not murdered by her son Tom claiming she did not strike or kill Mabel and detailing three days of family movements and oddities surrounding the slain daughter amid tense testimony with Eckstein and Weisenberger amid questions of motive and disputes.
Bechtel denies bloody overalls found in Miller yard belonged to Tom. She explains aprons stained from meat handling. She rejects alleged statements about Mabel and other men. She professes ignorance of Mabel's death and pleads despair over public scrutiny as cross examination begins.
In San Francisco on January 22 a safe was torn from the express car of the Sunset Limited near San Luis Obispo. robbers took a large sum allegedly up to 80 000 dollars before the safe was abandoned in rough terrain. The case involved Wells Fargo officials denying the full amount in the taken treasure.

In Shamokin Pennsylvania on January 22 former Congressman M H Kulp of the old seventh district sat on a copper letter file in his office. The implement pierced his right thigh and he was taken home for care. Doctors say the condition is gravely serious and every effort is being made to ease his suffering. Senator Hanna is confined to Red Washington with a severe attack of illness. He is under medical care and resting as ordered. The class is not serious and he is said to be improving.
Pittsburg Pa Jan 22 flood feared as weather forecasters warn the Monongahela and Allegheny valleys may crest around 35 feet exceeding the 1884 flood. Forecaster Ridgway says the rise could be rapid once snow melts with two feet per hour river growth and widespread preparations by businesspeople and factories to remove property from danger along the riverbanks.
Meadville Pennsylvania reports lower business and much of the residential area inundated after a thaw and 24 hours of heavy rain. Mill run ice blocks streets and water flows over banks, flooding 200 cedars along South Water street. Ice thickness in French creek reaches 18 inches but not yet dangerous. Also noted are dangers of an ice gorge at Steele's dam near Dayton Ohio and damages in Muncie Indiana oil fields with washed-out bridges. Pennsylvania Railroad plans to lift expenditure embargo on improvements starting early in the year.
