Farm Ponds Help Frederick County Orchard Drought Fight
Frederick County farmers rely on ponds and terracing at Catoctin Mountain Orchards to combat drought. Harry Black and wife Mary Black, honored as Outstanding Cooperator, used two large ponds plus new terraces and cover crops to store water and reduce runoff. Irrigation increased peach size by over 25 percent and apples similarly, supporting crops of peaches, plums, cherries, raspberries, and grapes despite dry conditions.
