Basic Civil Defense Plan To Stay Unchanged In Maryland

Maryland civil defense director Sherley Ewing said the basic plan will remain unchanged despite a near doubled CD appropriation in President Eisenhower's budget. The state will allocate funds to more complex equipment including medical supplies, radiological detection gear, firefighting trucks, and volunteer gear if approved. The report ties the higher budget to broader planning for dispersal of populations at risk. The piece also notes the national death rate for 1953 held at a record low of 96 per 1000, with 1,523,000 deaths estimated nationwide and influenza impacts in early 1953.
