Postwar rush to buy farms subsides, says Agriculture Dept
The Agriculture Department reports a postwar rush by city investors to buy farms has subsided. Land values rose 1 percent July to November, two percent above last year, with gains concentrated in the central corn belt and several states while declines appeared in the Mountain, Pacific Coast, Kentucky, and Maine. Strong hog prices and good crop weather supported prices, while drought and lender requirements cooled demand. A nationwide $10,000 Farm Building Improvement Contest offers prizes up to 1,500 for eligible projects, with 40 prizes of 100 and various other awards.

Farmers Question Effect On Their Operations
Maryland farmers ask how dropping cross-compliance for price support affects them. If using 1955 corn price support, stay within corn allotment for a loan. no need to meet all crop allotments for a loan on one. Quota penalties apply if marketing quotas exist and allotted acreage is exceeded. ACP requires staying within tall crop allotments to receive conservation aid. A Holstein cow completed a 221 day test, producing milk and butterfat. An HAF sergeant parachute anecdote noted.
