Weather Bureau warns rain tonight and Friday could swell creeks and spillways. Frederick County reports already high streams with ice and a viewable spillover at Fishing Creek Reservoir. temperatures in the 50s to 60s expected, then colder weekend air follows.
County officials remain undecided on how to replace the Park Mills Bridge after it collapsed. County Engineer Southey T Nottingham Jr reported that a temporary span would be unsatisfactory due to terrain and water depth. A decision on a permanent replacement and potential federal aid is expected early next week.
The 30 by 34 foot garrison flag from Ft. McHenry, stitched by Mary Pickersgill in 1813 for 405.90, now hangs unfurled in the Smithsonian Museum of History and Technology after 150 years, under controlled climate in the central rotunda.
Two crashes reported around 8 am on U S 40 and Md 355 involved a tractor trailer and a car on U S 40 near Bowers Road west of Frederick. Thomas Rogers age 27 of Cornapolis Pa charged with failing to reduce speed. Roscoe Dunbar Jr age 27 of Waynesboro Pa driving the other car. Damage estimated at 150 for the truck and 400 for the Ford. No injuries. Police Trooper Edward Lennox investigated. A second crash on Md 355 involved Betty Ann Lenhart and Walter Poole with Lenhart causing the truck to run off into a field. Lenhart age 31 of Frederick and Poole age 35 of Dickerson. Car damage 40 and truck 20. No injuries and no charges.
In Pueblo Colorado Betty Jo Hobson turns 25 on January 25. Her brother Tom turns 27 on May 27. Their brother Frank turned 20 last Monday January 20. In Saigon South Viet Nam the advisory legislature urged breaking ties with France over President de Gaulle neutralization plan.
An eight mile interstate chase at speeds up to 100 mph ended when a 1957 Pontiac crashed head on into a tree in Halltown West Virginia. The two occupants Herbert Wayne Hawks and William Lane Hawks were hospitalized and charged with weapons possession.
Carroll D Rosenbloom becomes sole owner of the Baltimore Colts in the NFL and immediately rescinds the announced ticket price increase. He acquired the team from Thomas Mullan and Zanvyl Krieger, who retain ties to the Orioles and Clippers in other leagues.
Frederick County American Red Cross board approves using Junior Red Cross funds to buy pediatric equipment for Frederick Memorial Hospital. 18 year old members with two years driving experience may operate the Red Cross wagon on official business as the canteen chair resigns and is replaced. The quarterly report shows a $24,961 chapter deficit against a $26,160 goal.
Joseph D. Baker, Frederick insur ance agent with Baker Kefauver, named chair of the convention committee for the Maryland Association of Insurance Agents. The state convention will be held here October 18 19 and 20. An active local leader, Baker has served as secretary treasurer and is vice president of the Frederick County Association of Independent Insurance Agents. The gathering is expected to draw about 400 independent agents and wives. Frederick chosen for central location and historic background says Glenn A. Main Jr. president.
President Sukarno hosted a palace event in Jakarta while President Kennedy conducted a two nation mission in Malaysia. The mission is described as successful and adds to Cold War era diplomacy.
Frank Leon Hackey 24 of Tee street held for grand jury after a magistrate’s preliminary hearing on altering a check. He allegedly cashed a $9.89 check at Farmers and Mechanics National Bank while a $2.89 amount was disputed. Hackey claimed a lost 2.89 check from Russell Company. defense argued signatures mismatch. Other actions included precautionary waivers in burglary cases and a $400 fine for Joseph Winegardner for unemployment fraud. Walter Wetzel was ordered held for grand jury action after a preliminary hearing.
The Civitan Club launches a public service campaign Protecting Freedom's Future to stress personal responsibility in good citizenship. Beginning last Thursday the drive runs through January to March with pamphlets posters matchbooks and pencils bearing Think Speak Register and Vote and Why Vote. Billboards near highways promote the campaign and Clyde Dinsmore chairs publicity for the observance.
In Geneva the Soviet Union demands scrapping of the proposed multilateral nuclear force before any agreement to curb nuclear weapons. The Soviet disarmament negotiator Semyon Tsarapkin said the multilateral force must be cleared away prior to handling Johnsons five point arms proposal. France plans rapid recognition of Red China and a Peking ambassadorial move is expected. Local notices include March of Dimes mothers march plans and community volunteers.
The Senate Finance Committee aims to finish work and vote final approval today on an $11 billion tax cut bill. Debate by the full Senate would begin next week.
Garnett C Ball 81 of Frederick died Wednesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer from Ijamsville, lived at the Francis Scott Key Hotel, and formerly on West Church Street. Survived by one sister Mrs Oscar S Braden of St Petersburg Fla and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services Saturday 10 am at Etchison and Son Funeral Home with interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
U S Attorney General Robert F Kennedy wrapped up a Malaysia mission with Indonesia and Malaysia agreeing to halt fighting along the Borneo border and join the Philippines in a foreign ministers conference. Kennedy headed to Bangkok and London for further talks while Sukarno pledged continued hostility.
Eight youths from Maryland's Sixth District were named by Congressman Charles Mathias to compete for appointments to the U S Military Academy at West Point, the U S Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy. Nominations reflect tests and recommendations from a nonpartisan Service Academies Review Board. final appointments depend on competitive exams.
