Local Draft Board Two issued a February call totaling 66 registrants from rural areas, mainly from the fifth registration for ages 18 to 20, reporting to Baltimore for physicals and potential induction. A second large call is expected next month as 18 year olds from the sixth registration are summoned for checks and possible March service.
In Brustow New York on January 23 a fire destroyed a two story frame home killing seven of eighteen children. Parents Mr and Mrs Emer Shutlts escaped after jumping from the burning building and were hospitalized. The eleven other children fled in night clothes and were uninjured. Victims listed include William Iv Whither Iv, Winifred11, Raymond3, Leona and Lena twins3, Franklin1, and Corinne five weeks old.
General Alexander Vandegrift reports ten Japanese killed for every American in Guadalcanal fighting with air losses in the Solomons at seventy to one. He asserts the Jap is formidable but not superman, and Guadalcanal is currently secure for US forces as Adams Paich assumes an advance base.
British bombers struck western Germany for the second night in a row amid the Ruhr valley industrial targets including Duesseldorf Essen Duisburg Cologne and Frankfurt. Berlin radio reported scattered bombings with civilian casualties and property damage while German raids over northern England yielded light damage and several Allied losses.
Washington reports the government dumped its 235 million bushel wheat stock onto the market to prevent price rises above parity. Prices were set at parity plus 23 cents at storage, with 85 percent parity loan rate used for cost and a continued wheat feed sale program limited to 125 million bushels this fiscal year.
Navy announces the Coast Guard cutter Natsek is overdue and presumed lost after weeks at sea with about 30 crew. Lieutenant La Farge, a noted artist’s relative, was aboard. Also notes WPA wind-up by May 1 and stock market activity with leaders stalling.

Maryland legislators consider a statewide property assessment bill creating county tax appeals courts. The plan requires Tax Commission input for assessor appointments, limits commissions’ control, and sets rotating annual reassessments. Proposed by the Senate, the bill would take effect June 1 and keeps the supervisor of assessments at 2100 annually.
The State Tax Commission, after consultation with the County Commissioners, endorses a bill that would alter the present two six year appointed assessors. If passed, future appointments would fall under the new act, aligning with the act’s selective date for appointing new assessors in the county.
American and Australian forces destroyed the last pockets of organized Japanese resistance in Tapa near Sanananda. About 1,200 Japanese casualties were counted in the Sanananda area, with total Jap dead reaching 2,109 in the sector. Allied gains included a wireless set, ammunition dumps, and large quantities of rifles and heavy weapons. Captains Vandaya Hamilton Reams Boyd led mopping up as mud and rain hampered operations.
Allied headquarters reported continued fighting near the Ousseltia valley below Pont Du Fahs as of Jan 23. British and U S planes bombed Axis positions while Lafayette Escadrille teams attacked enemy vehicles and machine gun posts in the area. A 20s and Hurricanes supported by Spitfires targeted more enemy tanks and other objectives near Pont Du Fahs.
An American Flying Fortress squadron in the southwest Pacific has logged over 1,000,000 miles across 630 missions in six months. It destroyed 33 enemy fighters, damaged more than 20 ships, sunk a heavy cruiser, and sent two merchant ships and a transport to the bottom. Sydney briefed by Sergeant Pilot Mervyn Hell of the Royal Australian Air Force, co-pilot of one plane in the squadron.
British forces enter Tripoli at 6 a.m. after heavy bombardment, destroying Axis transport and leaving remnants fleeing toward Tunisia. Montgomery’s army advances about 1,300 miles since El Alamein, with Rommel’s forces streaming across the Tunisian frontier to join Von Arnims troops at Bizerte and Gabes.

Flight from Santiago to Lima, 1600 miles, overdue since yesterday. last contact near Lima at 3 p.m. with no distress. Rescue teams scour southern Peru as weather and terrain hinder efforts.
The first mass transfer of skilled laborers from a less essential industry to an important war plant has been effected between two Cumberland industries. One transfer involves 25 skilled mechanics moving from Celanese Corporation to Kelly-Springfield Corporation, announced by Lawrence B. Fenneman, regional director of the War Manpower Commission for Maryland, on January 24.
Secretary Hull said the British Eighth Army capture of Tripoli is one of the most overwhelming and important Allied victories of the war. The United States government and people rejoice in the achievement and the Axis forces losing the North African city.
