The War Price and Ration Board issued notices for two motorists who failed to appear for hearings on pleasure driving. It announced ten more notices to be sent for hearings next Wednesday. Officials warn noncompliance may lead to suspension or revocation of all ration books.
In Annapolis on January 22 the Senate Finance committee signaled a close review of Governor O Connor's budget as it revealed thousands of state employees would receive wage increases. The panel learned budget director Walter Kirkman said about 70 percent of salaries would be adjusted July 1, but details on which positions or amounts were not provided.
The War Department announced Brig. Gen. Allan C. McBride a native of Frederick is a prisoner of war and interned at a Taiwan camp on Formosa near Japan. Twelve other American generals including Lieutenant General Jonathan M. Wainwright are prisoners at the same camp, information relayed by the International Red Cross.

Washington January 22 War Production Board chairman Donald M Nelson announced a per cent increase in farm machinery production. The allotment for farm equipment in the first quarter rose from 137000 to 187000 tons. Nelson defended the program against criticism from a Senate committee, saying the situation developed after the 1943 plan was made.
Reuters says Morocco Radio reports the British Eighth Army entered Tripoli suburbs and positioned artillery on a height commanding the city and harbor as main defenses fell. British air forces bombed Rommel's retreating columns and shipping in Tripoli harbor was targeted by Liberator aircraft.
The Maryland Senate debated bills to cut personal income tax rates in half and to grant a $200 bonus to teachers earning under $3,000. One measure would reduce rates to 2.14 percent and 1 percent, with two-year automatic rollback. another would create a $200 two-installment bonus for eligible teachers.

Maryland will be required to provide 376 nurses to the Army Navy and health services over three months as part of a nationwide recruitment drive endorsed by President Roosevelt Surgeon General Magee and other officials. The plan aims to recruit 36000 nurses plus 162 nurse aides and 14000 home nursing students from the state with eligibility for married nurses and dependents provisions.
