Snow, budgets and water: county outlook extends winter duties
County Commissioners president Sundergill says snow removal costs exceed budget and contingency funds will be tapped. Main roads to be cleared today, subdivision streets next, while ice may re-freeze at night. Soil conservationist Edwards notes snow infiltrates soil, boosts groundwater, reducing flood risk though springs flow lower than usual. Fertilizers are discouraged for ice melt due to nutrient runoff. pets should have salt cleaned from paws to prevent illness.

Maryland Red Cross Faces Blood Shortage Amid Severe Winter
In the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac region 59 blood drives were canceled this week and only 1,479 of 5,400 projected units were donated by Thursday. The Red Cross restricts blood orders to emergencies as 90 percent of regional hospital needs come from the chapter. Coast Guard and ice hamper rivers, with a barge delivering fuel oil halted on the Wicomico River and a wood chips barge stuck in Pocomoke Sound. Officials estimate winter costs remain unknown though plowing and labor exceed $12 million on average, with state spending near $17 million in 1993.

Aldermen split on checks amid 1993 campaign gifts
During the 1993 campaign only Mayor Jim Grimes received a $250 contribution from the construction firm R F Kline in October. Grimes said he did not know what to do with the money and that no bids were out. The final campaign report had already been filed. Officials debated the funds and potential changes to city ethics laws. Local officials face stricter ethics rules and note state laws also require reporting of gifts.
