Maryland Deaf School Faces Small Budget Hike Amid Cuts
Gov Parris Glendening pledges not to harm public education in his austere 1997 budget proposal yet the Maryland School for the Deaf MSD in Frederick and Columbia receives just a 1.7 percent increase to about 14.3 million while overall state education aid climbs more than 5.3 percent. MSD will lose five staff positions despite growing enrollment. Superintendent James Tucker calls for a 3 to 5 percent rise but expresses gratitude for any increase as some agencies see bigger cuts. Glendening says the school is an important institution and his staff later argues the school is receiving a 5 percent increase.
