GOP Effort to Repair Patronage System Faces Hurdles
NEA correspondent Peter Edson outlines Republican attempts to streamline patronage, noting Willis White House orders to report vacancies, the 303 jobs lacking Civil Service lists, and Robbins at GOP headquarters maintaining a 3000-name file. The piece details Civil Service Schedule A and B limits, Schedule C’s 1052 top policy posts, and how the Wilks directive aims to fill these gaps, with mixed success and criticism.

Mt Airy Residence Damaged By Fire
Firefighters responded to a Wednesday blaze at Dr. William B. Culwell’s Mt Airy home on South Main Street. Flames reached the roof at 2:05 p.m. and were confined to an attic knee wall and storage area, likely starting from electrical wiring. The three story stucco house with asbestos shingles suffered about 2500 in damage from charred rafters and flooring. Fire crews used three engines and salvaged furnishings on the second floor. The home’s full insulation helped limit losses while nearby properties and a Chevrolet sales building were protected with a precautionary line.
