Guilty Plea in Fatal Shooting Amends Maryland Case
A Frederick man Mack Evans Jr. 47 pleaded guilty in Circuit Court to manslaughter in the August 28 shooting death of Community Action Agency coordinator Percy Van Dawson 27. Evans who shot Dawson after a street altercation is held without bond awaiting a pre-sentence report. Dawson died two hours after the 7:40 AM shooting at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Authorities say Evans faces murder and two assault charges and turned himself in shortly after the incident.

Hundreds of years of court records taxes and county papers lie in a dirt floored attic at the county courthouse many dating before the Civil War. Historians call the collection possibly the best in the state and urge cataloguing and shelving though space limits threaten preservation amid leaks heat and neglect. Access was restricted to the attic last year by a special lock in the elevator with authorized personnel only. Some documents have already deteriorated and been misused while others remain on dusty shelves under a leaky roof. The county has begun to address the issue but much remains to be done.
