Negron seeks new start after praise and backlash
Negron, lauded as a hero by the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and awarded $1,000, says close friends, including some Puerto Ricans, turned against him and he became an outcast. He lists offers from SBA for a $15,000, 15-year loan without collateral, jobs from Staten Island Ferry and Metropolitan Life, and hope of reinstated seaman status with the National Maritime Union. Rep. James H. Scheuer pledges help as Negron contemplates a break to sail again for a year.
