American To Be Top Naval Commander In Atlantic Wars
Prime Minister Churchill yielded to an American as Supreme Allied Naval Commander in the Atlantic, securing a pledge of steel for Britain in exchange for tin and aluminum. Admiral Lynde D. McCormick, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, was seen as the likely choice. The accord, announced by Truman and Churchill, began NATO approval steps while Churchill kept right to modify later.

Probe of Grunewald May Help to Shush Teitelbaum Case
Federal grand jury probes Henry W. Grunewald in Washington as a DOJ move to curb disclosures in the Teitelbaum tax and shake-down case. U.S. attorney Irelan says Grunewald will testify Feb. 4, with subpoenas already issued for him to appear before the King Committee Feb. 13, amid fears witnesses will be barred from testifying further. The King Committee’s records are partly sent to DOJ, but much remains, raising concern of a possible whitewash if grand jury secrecy blocks further hearings.
