Washington reports American submarines sunk one destroyer and four other ships in the Pacific, including a large cargo ship and a transport. Two ships were damaged, a large tanker and a small cargo ship. The communique notes no prior announcements of these sinkings.
Signalman Third Class Norman Karn recalls the Leedstown sinking in Atlantic waters during a convoy attack on November 9 his eighteenth birthday. He swam to safety in Algeria, endured food shortages and air raids, then faced another torpedo strike en route to Gibraltar before reaching safety aboard coastal and British ships.
Allied Headquarters reports Jan 19 that ground forces captured Sanananda Point and nearby village in northeastern New Guinea. The push, part of a broader offensive, trapped remaining Japanese pockets inland along the main trail as Australian and American units closed in on Giruwa Tarakena and the coastal pocket near the motor road.
Mrs Mary Worthington McGill Dennis wife of George R Dennis died just after midnight following a nine year illness in Urbana. She lived in Frederick during winters at the Francis Scott Key notes and was daughter of Dr Wardlow and Georgia Pearte McGill of Cumberland. A reserved gardener and Colonial Dames member she attended All Saints and Zion Episcopal churches. Survived by husband and two daughters Mrs Louis Murray Rawlins Jr Baltimore and Mrs James Coale Sappington NL Washington DC with grandsons Dennis Murray Rawlins James Dennis Sappington. Body at funeral home 106 East Church St calling after four tomorrow. Funeral Thursday at 3 at All Saints Church with interment Mt Olivet cemetery Vincennes.
New York, Jan. 19. Further recovery tendencies appeared in individual stocks in today’s market as some shares rose while others remained largely indifferent. The report notes varied performance across sectors with certain leaders advancing in the morning session.
Coroner Eugene Johneason summoned a jury for an inquest into the freezing deaths of a boy and a girl found in an automobile on Camp Point main street. A third youth was critically ill in a hospital, while another car occupant was unharmed.

Twenty men from Draft Board One, evenly split white and colored, will depart this afternoon at four to report to the Army. Leaders include Russell H. L. Yinger and Sylvester A. Gwynn among others. Abraham Solar will depart tomorrow. All have passed final physicals and been accepted into service.
Informed tersoday reports say there is no likelihood of a local bill to abolish the county constable’s office. Women’s groups suggested elimination as an economy move, but local delegates indicated they would study the proposal without committing. Delegates were in Annapolis and one member stated the plan appeared vacated before departure.

Baltimore scene mourns as Chief Justice Carroll T Bond aged 69 dies at home after long illness. A Harvard and Maryland Law graduate, he led a reform commission to reorganize Maryland courts. Survived by three brothers and a sister, Bond served on Baltimore and Maryland appellate benches since 1926 and headed the court until his death.
Harrisburg January 19 1945 Mejor Zener takes office as Pennsylvania's governor and immediately proposes a program to prevent the draft as another generation of soldiers after the war.
British field reports place the Eighth Army about 40 miles from Tarhuna and 50 miles southeast of Tripoli as Rommel’s forces withdraw. A coastal column reached Zliten, 90 miles east of Tripoli, after penetrating Misurata and Garibalde. Beni Alid fell after a tank battle. In Tunisia, Allied air and land actions near Bou Arada, Pont Du Fahs, and Castel Benito disrupted Axis advances while Allied armored units recaptured ground and took prisoners.
Second Lieut Kathryn Louise Hoffman, 23, of the US Army Nursing Corps, died Monday at the US Army Hospital Fort Ord California from a brain tumor after a brief illness. She was a graduate of Frederick City Hospital Nurses Training School 1940 and Frederick High School 1937, daughter of J. Calvin Hoffman of Adamstown and Mrs Mabel Boyd Hoffman, with surviving relatives including her father, stepmother Lucy Sennarts Holtman, and sisters Mrs Carl E Brown and Mrs D Bernard Holter. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
President Roosevelt as Commander in Chief directed all striking anthracite coal miners to return immediately. He warned that if the order is disobeyed within 48 hours the government will take necessary steps to protect national security amid wartime fuel shortages. About 9,000 workers returned in Pennsylvania with roughly 12,450 still idle.
City engineers study ways to operate both air raid horn and fire siren from City Hall using existing air compressor system. Manufacturers propose solutions including a manual pull valve or two way electric switch with independent valves for each horn. Proposals aim to keep air raid and fire alarm functions while possibly adding a separate fire siren.
No Birthday Ball in this city this year due to gas rationing and wartime restrictions. Allen Y. Benimett announces a fund drive instead with equal portions to the national and local treatment funds. The drive opens Wednesday, targeting collection in local industries, businesses, and schools.
