Coal Miners May Get Higher Wages In 20 Cent Boost
Washington reports President John L. Lewis summoned his 200 man policy committee to meet on Friday amid industry chatter that a 20 cent an hour wage increase may be granted for some soft coal miners. Lewis has met secretly with negotiators from steel companies and northern operators, while discussions with Southern Coal Producers Association leaders intensify. The anticipated voluntary rise would put soft coal miners at about 1.65 dollars per hour and 14 dollars 75 cents for an eight hour day, with wage stabilization looming if a lift is not agreed promptly. Industry groups resist price changes and warn that a wage freeze could trigger broader economic friction.
