A Juarez despatch reports Albert Simmons of Los Angeles and Victor Hamilton of Chicago were killed by Villa bandits near Pedrickini Mexico. Carranza officials say Americans were killed for being U S subjects while Wilson administration supported Carranza. Gore’s Senate resolution calls for a jointly policed neutral zone in northern Mexico to restore order with U S and Mexican forces.
Eliseo Arredondo Carranza pledges to help capture the J. S. Mexican Bandita to protect Americans. State department officials say the advice is not yet sufficient to determine Carranza government responsivity and pledge further investigation.
Rome will appoint an independent commission to investigate German atrocities in Belgium, based on Cardinal Mercier’s report to the pope. The cardinal said the German episcopate would accept an arbitration commission he appointed, and the pope promised to base responsibility on his commission’s findings.
A relief ship Celebes sailed from New York carrying 185000 sacks of wheat worth about 280000 dollars and 10000 dollars of beans. The voyage was funded by a record drive by the Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania committee for relief in Belgium aided by over 42000 donors. The ship bore a banner naming it the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania Relief Ship.
Berlin papers citing Overseas News Agency say allied troops may have landed at Phaleron near Athens, seen as proof entente powers will press Greece by extreme means. Gulgars Hold Women reports two American women detained at Monastir by Bulgars.
The Overseas News Agency reports Montenegro sought peace in parliament via Count Tisza. Austria’s terms would guarantee Montenegrin territorial rights in Scutari in exchange for Lovcen. Allied aerials bombarded Bulgarian camps. Montenegro vows to continue fighting. King Nicholas and Montenegrin forces deny any separate peace. Montenegro joined the war August 8, 1914.
Vienna reports a brutal battle in east Galicia and Bessarabia with very heavy Russian casualties. Official war office statements say Russian attacks were repeatedly repulsed, often by bayonet. A compromised pause followed a Russian defeat on the Bessarabian frontier, with intermittent artillery fire resuming. An Austro-Hungarian patrol surprised a Russian advance post near Karpilovka, annihilating its occupants.
Athens reports the Greek government and king will proclaim martial law this week. Parliament is due to convene next Monday and is expected to ratify the action. The news follows reports from the Karros newspaper.
