Riot at Dupont Polish church shocks Pittston
In Pittston Pennsylvania January 17 a church riot at Dupont involving Polish Catholic factions left one man dead and two dying, with seven troopers seriously injured and many others battered. The fighting followed a dispute over Bishop Hobin's appointment of Rev Frances Sewsnowski and an ensuing contempt of court case. Police escorted the pastor to the church, where more than a thousand demonstrators, armed and enraged, clashed with state troopers amid chaotic scenes.

A large fire in Mt Carbon destroyed the cotton storage and tank houses of Atlas Powder, a Dupont subsidiary. Firemen fought to save the acid house and magazine where about 120000 dollars worth of guncotton was stored, declared non explosive by officials. Spontaneous combustion in the freshly filled cotton house started the blaze, wiping out the entire cotton stock.
