Problems Face Poultrymen
COLLEGE PARK Jan 15 Freezing water in drinking fountains and wet litter are two problems facing poultrymen this time of year. George Quigley of the University of Maryland poultry department offers solutions. He suggests electric resistance tape to protect pipes from freezing and a 250 watt infrared bulb hung about 24 inches above water with a porcelain socket and protection from birds. Litter troubles vary. hydrat ed lime is recommended at 100 pounds per 4 inches of floor space, avoiding quicklime. A hand garden cultivator can mix lime into litter and spot turn around feeders and fountains, cutting labor time by about two thirds.
