Education secretary calls for more homework and reading
Education Secretary William J Bennett told Congress that more homework and more third graders who can read matter more than extra federal funding for schools. He defended a Reagan budget cutting federal education spending, arguing funds are wasted if not well spent and that the nation already spends more on education than Japan. Senate critics pressed for priority to teachers and preschool programs, while Bennett warned many students may abandon college under deep aid cuts.
