Baptists Review Self in Broad Study Findings
A new historical study of the Southern Baptist Convention, supervised by a five man commission, shows Baptists shifting toward centralized organization while maintaining independence. It notes the movement away from “high church” exclusiveness, greater social gospel engagement, and continued avoidance of joining inner-denominational bodies. The study, published by Broadman Press, traces the denomination from 108 years ago to today, with nearly eight million members and rapid growth since 1950. Porter Routh says the work can help Baptists understand themselves better.
