Federal jobs fall while local staff rise in 1953 report
A Department of Commerce study shows 12 months ending October 1953 saw federal employment drop about 200,000 to under 2,406,000, offset by a rise to 4,710,000 in state and local payrolls led mainly by local governments. The report credits administration economy plans though notes population growth pressures local services and criticizes waste. A Willing Workers Sewing Circle meeting at Grace Lutheran Rocky Hill included readings, a white elephant sale plan, and a New Year party with games and prizes.
