Carolyn Travers, 28, joins as 4-H Youth Leader in the Leader Section with Chuck Hommey, bringing past Maryland and NCSU education degrees and prior work as a 4-H agent in North Carolina. Dianne Hovey, 24, becomes home economics agent, focusing on new programs and extending outreach to homemakers, after previously serving in Frederick since November.

Ice Storm Closes Schools In Frederick Area

An ice storm has shut down all county public and parochial schools in Frederick and halted mail deliveries as sleet and snow threaten travel. Temperatures near freezing plus freezing rain and snow are expected, with power and phone service largely intact.

Bobby Baker Begins Term In Prison

Bobby Baker, 42, the Washington influence peddler who boasted of ties to Lyndon B. Johnson, surrendered today to a U.S. marshal to begin a prison term for cheating the government. He wore sunglasses in freezing rain as deputies prepared to drive him about three miles to a Federal Penitentiary in Lewisburg Pennsylvania after the Supreme Court refused his appeal.

Drivers Escape Injury on Icy Streets and Roads

Fire claims nine lives at Louisville senior home

A fire at Westminster Terrace Presbyterian Home for Senior Citizens near Louisville killed nine residents and injured at least 48. The blaze started about 2 15 a.m. in the chapel area, with the building evacuated and uninjured residents taken to hospitals and nearby churches. Fire officials said the dining room and chapel were destroyed, while most living areas escaped heavy damage.

Duckett Drug Trial Delayed by Ice in Circuit Court

The narcotics trial of Clarence Danilo Duckett was moved to a later date after only 11 jurors appeared due to icy roads. Key witnesses could not attend as hazardous conditions persisted. Special Meeting On Family Life Curriculum Aids

A public viewing of Family Life and Human Development films slides books and print material approved by Frederick County Board of Education will be held at Linganore High School Monday at 7 30 pm. Attendance is limited to Singanore High School area residents. State Board of Education laws require public viewing to judge acceptability for use in schools and Linganore curriculum committee will have recommendations.
