Pope begins Asian tour in Philippines greeting crowds

Pope John Paul II arrived in Manila to a thunderous welcome as police estimated 3.5 million people turned out for the start of an 11 day Asia tour. He thanked the Philippines for its "special vocation" to spread Christianity and called the country a beacon of peace in the region.

Japan unveils joint jet fighter prototype near Nagoya

Japan revealed the first prototype of its FSX next generation fighter after a two year delay amid U S pressure. The lightweight craft based on the F 16 is intended for sea and land defense. Malcolm X Daughter Indicted Over Plot to Kill Farrakhan

Qubilah Shabazz, 34, is charged with using a telephone and crossing state lines to hire a hit man to murder Louis Farrakhan. The plot allegedly did not advance beyond planning, and Farrakhan was never in immediate danger. If convicted she faces up to 90 years in prison and $2.25 million in fines.
