Frederick division manager W C Fisher of Potomac Edison said the 3 percent voltage reduction has ended as thawed coal supplies allow a return to normal electric supply. He warns the coal strike still clouds the outlook and urges residents to conserve electricity for non essential use.
Frederick County delegation killed six of twelve bills aired on Thursday with one outrightly killed and five labeled unfavorable. Two bills advanced, four held for further study. Other notes report Potomac Edison and Allegheny Power easing coal related outages as coal reserves dwindle and urges conservation while warning major users may be asked to curb use if supplies fall to about a 40 day reserve.
A Friday the 13th snowstorm paralyzed Maryland areas with several inches of snow. Frederick County schools closed as roads became hazardous, while state police warned of dangerous morning driving conditions. By midmorning, county crews reported fair to good road conditions on primary routes though city streets lagged. The storm brought drifting snow, high winds, and a forecast of continued snow, freezing rain, and possible accumulations into Saturday morning.
Maryland banks raise rates with a quarter point hike effective today. Willard Horiie of Maryland National Bank notes loans set at 9 percent up to 60 000 and 30 years, larger loans at 95 percent. The prime rate climbed to 8 percent, signaling possible further mortgage increases amid a recovering economy.
Frederick County liquor commissioner Ellis G. Carty announced a tough stance on sales to minors. Mountain Liquors in Emmitsburg closed 15 days after owner Charles W. Buch was convicted of selling whiskey to a 17 year old. A school principal’s complaint spurred the action, highlighting broader concerns about underage drinking among county youths.
Thurmont businessman Sterling E. Bollinger criticizes current county government as inefficient and hard to manage like a business. He backs electing a county executive to run day to day affairs while commissioners keep policy making, plans a public forum for Jan. 19, and notes voter resistance and political friction shape the debate.
