Gettysburg expansion spurs battle era land push
The Wall Street Journal cites critics of development near Gettysburg as plans for two real estate projects threaten historic landmarks and taverns along Emmitsburg Road. The National Park Service seeks to acquire up to 680 additional acres at a cost approaching 15 million dollars as part of a 30 million national land purchase drive. The dispute frames Gettysburg as a magnet for Civil War tourism facing growth pressures during the centennial era.

Maryland House rescinds $10 daily spending increase
In Annapolis the Maryland House of Delegates quickly rescinded last week’s $10 a day rise in spending money, restoring the daily allowance to $20.150. The move followed debates in the Senate where the issue had been discussed, with leadership signaling formal action next week. Delegates, many sworn in only recently, accepted the increase previously, while Gov elect Tawes pressed for careful consultation. The revocation came as part of routine organizational steps, with the other bill addressing separate funding measures proceeding.
