An attempted abduction of Miss Anni H. Steckel in Allentown ends with a wedding party chauffeur ordered to speed away toward the country. The car swerved toward a police station where Officer Boyle and soldiers intervened. Chauffeurs Sinclair and Starr were arrested then released for $3000 bonds each, provided by Dr. Starr’s father. The case centers on claims of a kidnapping plot involving the Steckel family and a retired businessman Ruben Steckel in Allentown, with Mrs. Steckel asserting no current contact from relatives.
In Norfolk Virginia on January 13 a ban on goats and other pets aboard U S Navy ships was lifted after Rear Admiral Doyle disputed being butted by a goat on the battleship New Hampshire. Navy officials had cited medical concerns about diseases but Admiral Doyle said pets were removed only temporarily and will be restored once infection fears pass. Assistant Secretary Winthrop ordered investigation and the Navy department noted the ban would be reversed.
Bovertown Pa recalls the opera house fire that killed 171 people five years ago on a Monday night. The tragedy, the worst in a town of about 3000, left many scarred by injuries and burns while others escaped.

Jellico Tennessee January 13 In a cross border exchange of shots Lewisa Caddell fifteen shot and killed A W Chambers sixteen. Chambers was at a girl’s home both boys were paying attention when Caddell called Chambers left but lay in wait. Chambers appeared and Caddell fired. The gunfire was returned. Chambers was in Kentucky and Caddell in Tennessee when the shots were exchanged. The slayer vanished after the tragedy.
