Gov J Millard Tawes has agreed to appear at a gubernatorial candidates night at North Frederick Elementary School January 25 730 p m. The event brings all major candidates together to discuss issues with others possibly attending.
Lawrence Powell was elected president of the Young Democrats club at a meeting Thursday night at Winchester Hall. Goodloe E. Byron retiring president presided. Other officers elected were Stanley Y. Bennett first vice president Donald Woods second vice president Miss Vivian Hatcher corresponding secretary Miss Margaret Atkinson recording secretary Randolph B. Rosencrantz treasurer. Elected as board members were Austin Bohn Bruce Porter Guy Baker William Eyler Ann Mosburg Donald Whitworth and Goodloe Byron. Miss Jean Wastler was elected as delegate to the state executive committee.
Local resident seeks help after losing keys on a cold day. A note suggests visiting the Clerk of the Court at the Court House to resolve lockout issues. Ellis Wachter reportedly found thirteen keys at the Court House, all appearing to be door keys. He can apply at his office.
The temperature will run 8 to 10 degrees below normal, moderating over the weekend and turning colder by Monday or Tuesday. Normal highs are 38 to 44, lows 24 to 30, with mountain areas higher. Light snow mainly in the mountains, with rain or snow likely Monday, totaling about 0.25 to 0.5 inch of precipitation.
Maryland planning group projects Frederick County will reach 80,300 residents in 1970 up from 71,930 in 1960, with growth slowing after the 1950s. Statewide totals rise to about 3.838 million by 1970, while counties near Baltimore and Washington show varied gains.
The Eastern Shore of Maryland recorded its third snowfall of the year with Salisbury receiving about an inch of powdery snow within an hour. A white Continental Trailways driver and local townspeople in Crossett Ark sheltered Mae Johnson and her granddaughter Gwendolyn Faye after a snowbound bus stalled two days. Volunteers provided meals, lodging offers, and warm care as information spread via radio, prompting white and Black families to open their homes to the travelers.

The Republican National Committee meets in Oklahoma City to chart campaign strategy. Chairman William Miller predicts big 1962 GOP victories in Congress and states while warning failures could hurt the 1964 presidential bid. Miller cites off-year trends, reapportionment gains, and growing GOP strength in the South and in states such as Florida.
The Brunswick office said no further furlough notices were received for railroad employees. About January 5 a reshuffling in the Brunswick yard caused layoffs mainly in the car shop, with unknown numbers. Baltimore and Ohio announced 1795 layoffs across 31044 employees due to decreased freight traffic, despite a late 1961 upswing in business that led to recalls for some workers. Some layoffs are temporary with possible recalls at Pittsburgh locomotive shops.
NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center announced selection of an advanced Saturn design with a five-engine first stage delivering 1.7 million pounds of thrust and a five-engine second stage plus a single-engine third stage. The system, ready by 1968, aims to lift about 110 tons and support earth-escape and lunar missions including a future manned lunar landing. The design, likely known as C5, bypasses prior concepts C2 C3 and C4 to maximize power for crewed lunar flight and return.
Dr. Harry W. Gray, local obstetrician, elected a member of the Hospital Council of Maryland Inc. board of trustees at the annual meeting in Baltimore. He is affiliated with Frederick Memorial Hospital. John B. Rich of Annapolis was elected president. he is an investment banker and longtime Anne Arundel General Hospital trustee.
Baltimore County PTA leaders condemn Gov. Tawes for 1961 state college funding. Mt St Mary's received 500000 while Towson State Teachers College got 350000 for capital improvements. They cite 300 qualified Towson Frostburg applicants turned away for lack of facilities.
Prime Minister Menzies warned Australia would fight to protect East New Guinea if Indonesia expands beyond Dutch West New Guinea. He noted Indonesia denied ambitions in East New Guinea, a U N trusteeship, and urged a negotiated settlement. Dutch carrier Karel Doorman sails in goodwill probe.
Two female drivers escaped charges after a minor collision Thursday at West Second Street and Dulaney Avenue. Mary Elizabeth Coran, 61 Volkswagen, West Second, and Frances M. Offutt, 57 Dodge, Bartonsville, reported blocked view by buses and parked cars. Damages estimated at 50 and 10 dollars respectively.
A Treasury Department ruling allows Marylanders to deduct ground rents paid on properties from federal income tax for all of 1961. Irving Machiz of the IRS Baltimore district said the ruling standardizes treatment for calendar year taxpayers regardless of when rents were paid or accrued. He noted that Maryland ground rents with no fixed redemption date paid or accrued after July 22 1961 would not be deductible in 1962 or later unless they formed a proper basis.
