Maryland Governor Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin delivered a stark inaugural address urging rapid civilian defense planning and readiness. He warned of possible world war impacts, proposed a state program, and called for economy, reform, and unity while stressing education, highways, and state rights.
Numerous city and county Republicans departed for Annapolis to attend Governor Theodore R. McKeldin’s inauguration. Attendees included Mayor Elmer F. Mun showers, Clerk of the Circuit Court Ellis C. Wachter, Register of Wills Harry D. Radcliff, John A. Derr, Emmett R. Bowlus, and other party leaders and staff.
In Annapolis on January 10 1941 Governor Lane reduced five year applicable sentences for James V La Guardia Delmar Foster and Gilmer P Mc Arthur from death and life imprisonment to lesser terms. The trio linked to a Baltimore county rape case and armed robbery charges may gain early release based on jail time credit behavior and pending legal considerations. Bread price up one cent to 20 cents at standard loaf amid regional hikes.

Bair, Samuel N. Himes, Archie Harrison Hawkins, Clarence Osear Flook, Albert William Angleberger, and John William Brosius Jr. Two men, Clinton F. Nokes and Freeman Dolor Eyler, were revoked after being convicted of driving on revoked licenses.
Senator Aiken warns that any price controls on food now would cause shortages and cites administration hints as a factor in recent price rises. Meanwhile livestock groups press for a closed Agriculture Department briefing to argue that meat controls could trigger black markets and shortages.
Washington hearings before a Senate Armed Services subcommittee examined a proposal by Defense Secretary Marshall and Anna Rosenberg to draft all physically fit 18-year-olds for 27 months. The plan seeks immediate enactment of universal military training and service, with 18-year-olds immediately brought into active duty if possible. If not, Congress might allow calling married men and fathers from the existing 19–26 bracket. the present 18 draft requirement is registration only with a 21-month service limit and the current law expires next July 9.
County 32 Homemakers Clubs directors met Tuesday in the Extension Service room to review duties, attend the Council of Homemakers' Clubs, and discuss reports from the year's first board meeting. Names of 1951 club directors across many towns were listed.
A gambler was shot and killed early today in a private club while two policemen were visiting on a routine check. Joseph Francis Nesline, 36, was booked for the slaying and the victim was identified as George P. Warding, 39. Both men reportedly had police records dating back to youth.
Tokyo January 104 The Eighth Army takes over from General MacArthur’s headquarters complete control of news of allied ground forces in Korea. Lt Gen Matthew B Ridgway leads the force, succeeding Lt Gen Walton H Walker who died in a jeep accident. Col M P Evhols announced Tokyo will issue Korean releases on military operations.
Joseph Knott of Urbana was found guilty of using dealer tags for improper purposes and faces $19 in fines and costs after an appeal was not noted by his attorney. Elbert Cheeks of Route 8 Frederick was dismissed on a similar dealer tag charge. The magistrate noted owners are responsible for truck registrations and tags. A Baltimore attorney failed to prove Leigh Bonsal innocent of exceeding the six mile limit and sought mercy on the record. Other arrests: John Michael Geteendanner for operating without tags was dismissed. collateral forfeitures included disobeying turning, failure to drive correctly, and failure to stay in the right of center, with officers Myers and Tucker handling duties.
Baltimore transit tensions escalate as Baltimore Transit Company rejects arbitration saying it would be one sided. BTC would seek another rate review before the Public Service Commission. APL union, representing 3000 operators, demands wage increases of 20 to 35 cents an hour and votes on strike planned for Friday and Saturday.
A Norman Dietz is officially named desk sergeant of the Frederick city police by an order from Mayor Elmer F. Munshower, effective yesterday. He has served since 1941 and had been acting day desk sergeant during illness of Austin Heffner, retiring after a long service period. He lives at 215 South Market Street.
MacArthur’s spokesman denied any plan to withdraw UN forces from Korea. The Chicago Daily News story cited sources claiming MacArthur recommended withdrawal, but officials called it imagination. New censorship rules forbid discussion of withdrawal in Korea, and Washington said no such recommendation exists.
The Mayor and Council of Bruns wick acted favorably on a town employees salary increase petition, but final approval rests with the Finance Commission. No further details were released. Routine business followed with reports on water line work, blasting needs, snow removal, dairy inspection, and street and sewer matters.

Four infants born by Caesarean section to Mrs. Anne Rosebush at Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. Two boys and two girls, placed in incubators and said to be “road sized,” each estimated at 4½ to 6 pounds. This marks Michigan’s second set of quadruplets, with the Marlok girls of Lansing as the first.

Boston AP editor dan Shea printed 200 greeting cards to resemble theater tickets inviting friends to a Yuletide theater. He faced a tax demand from the Collector of Internal Revenue citing Form 720. Shea lamented the idea but must pay the ticket tax.
