Israeli Tanks Sweep Sidon Wounding Ten In Two Runs
In Sidon, Lebanon two Israeli tanks roared through the southern port city firing machine guns at parked cars and ramming vehicles injuring about ten people. Eyewitnesses and AP reporter Mantash described pedestrians diving for cover and shop shutters coming down. Israeli sources in Tel Aviv denied tank involvement and speculated allied militia under Maj Saad Haddad may have carried out the operation. The injuries were minor from glass and bullets and Sidon was a virtual ghost town after the second sweep. Nazih Nakousi of Al Anwar was among the injured.
