Maryland Governor seeks sales tax hike and withholding plan
Maryland Governor McKeldin urged the 1955 General Assembly to raise the state sales tax from 2 to 3 cents and to implement employer withholding of state income tax, effective mid year, to generate about 28 to 29 million dollars for expanded state services. He proposed higher rates for corporations and individuals, but favored keeping cigarettes untaxed to protect business. The plan aims to speed revenue collection and fund education health and welfare while expanding home rule for counties.
