Maryland asks 550 million to modernize roads to Washington
Washington January 5 Maryland Governor William Preston Lane Jr leads a Maryland delegation to President Truman requesting a 550 million federal appropriation to finance direct improvements to roads into the District of Columbia. The plan calls for a 3 million annual federal grant matched by Maryland, with 118.27 million total needed for direct projects including Route 240 and other major arteries. Lane cited Maryland traffic as a national service and cited 72 percent of vehicles into DC pass through Maryland. Lane and Fleming gave a hopeful but noncommittal tone about Congress action.
