Woman Bars Paying Fare, Enters Jail
A 23 year old commuter in London chose jail over a $2.70 fare after losing a court battle with British Railways. Anne Melville, awoken by a bailiff, began a seven day sentence in a London jail rather than pay extra for moving from second to first class. Her husband Richard said she was upset but brave. The incident stemmed from a December 1969 journey from London to Brighton when she paid 90 cents to upgrade, but the conductor required the full first class fare under the commuter ticket rule. A Brighton judge had ruled against her last month.
