Frederick County will receive 57 311 as its quarter share of cigarette tax revenue for the period ending December 31 1961. The comptroller's office announced the total distribution to Baltimore City and 23 counties for the last quarter of 1961 is 2 615 920, with the six month subdivision share at 5 879 307.

Fire damages $100,000 blaze at St. Leonard shopping center
A major fire swept through a small shopping center in St. Leonard Maryland causing about $100,000 in damage. More than 200 firefighters from 17 departments battled the flames for over two hours. A gas station, TV appliance store, grocery and barber shop were leveled, with six firefighters lightly injured. Apartments above the stores were also damaged and one resident fled to safety. The fire started about 8:50 p.m. All closed for the night except the gas station.

Retired Engineer Dies in Chevy Chase House Fire
Louis F. Bessey a 70 year old retired government engineer was found dead on the second floor hallway of his Connecticut Avenue home after a morning fire. Firemen reported flames near the rear of the house as they arrived at 5 12 am and the cause was listed as unknown. The victim who lived alone had retired from the Interstate Commerce Commission about four years ago. His wife was the sister of Maj. Gen. Leonard D Heaton. The home lies just north of the District of Columbia Maryland boundary and traffic was rerouted for about two hours.

Mrs Barbara Randolph a 26 year old Baltimore woman received a one year sentence in the Maryland Reformatory for Women after a failed hold up using a long handled hair brush. Samuel Korn a 62 year old market proprietor restrained her and alerted police. The incident occurred last November 12 in Baltimore.
