IRA ambush in Armagh kills two policemen in New Year blitz
In central Armagh near Belfast, three hooded IRA guerrillas used a remote device to fatally wound two Royal Ulster Constabulary officers and injure a third minutes after the new year. The IRA claimed a renewed campaign and warned of more attacks in 1986. The slain officers were James Andrew McCandless, 38, and Michael Williams, 24. The wounded officer survived but was not named. The incident underscores the ongoing sectarian violence as political negotiations continue.
