Permanent rodeo site in Johnsville earns conditional approval

Frederick County Board of Appeals approves a special exception for a 47 acre Johnsville arena to host up to 36 rodeo events from April to September with limits on noise lighting and attendance. Conditions include two three day events, four two day events, 19 one day events, nightly cutoff at 10 pm, sound monitoring, on site lighting control, health dept rules, and possible septic field.

Frederick viewers witness partial solar eclipse

In Frederick local observers Robert Venezia and his wife Laura paused work to view the eclipse from Mount Olivet Heights. They used a Schmidt Cassegrain telescope with a stainless steel filter and shared remarks on astronomy and patience as clouds drifted by. The event spanned roughly from 12:30 p.m. to about 2 p.m.

Not easy to quit driving at Anne Arundel station

Fourteen drivers with suspended or revoked licenses were arrested after driving to an Anne Arundel police station monitoring program stakeout. County hires new library director from Las Vegas

The Frederick County Commissioners selected Darrell Batson of Las Vegas Nevada as the new Frederick County library director with a salary over 77 000 a year up from the prior 57 611. Batson brings 20 years in libraries directing 27 locations across 175 square miles overseeing 550 staff and a 27 million budget. His first task on March 30 is coordinating the C Burr Artz Library expansion and renovation.

Frederick County students named National Merit finalists

Jennifer Gaskins of Gov. Thomas Johnson High and Anand Nathan of Frederick High are named National Merit finalists, among about 15,000 nationwide competing for roughly 7,400 scholarships. The honor places them in under 1 percent of US high school seniors. Gaskins, 17, takes AP English Latin and physics plus Drama 4 and enjoys policy debate theater and karate.
