Bill Would Charge Teen Drug Offenders as Adults

Carroll County State's Attorney Jerry Barnes told a legislative hearing that youths aged 16 and 17 charged with felony drug offenses should be tried as adults. A bill by Delegate Joseph M. Getty would automatically move such cases to adult court, supported by parents and Barnes, following heroin overdose deaths in Carroll County. The measure contrasts with current juvenile penalties and cites recent hospital overdoses and community outrage.

Ex parte violators face judge under new bail review plan

Legislation moving in the Maryland General Assembly would require violators of ex parte orders to appear before a judge rather than a District Court Commissioner for bail review. Supporters say the change would provide stronger consequences and give victims time to seek help, noting prior violations led to two murders. Maryland AG Joseph Curran backs the bill.
