Weather Bureau warns a large storm center approaches bringing heavy snow and near blizzard winds. Forecasters predict over four inches with highs in the 30s and lows around 17 degrees as the snow covers the state tonight into Wednesday.
Community groups in Jefferson will tear down the Fry house beside the Western Maryland Trust Jefferson branch to make space for a shared parking lot. The property was purchased last fall by Western Maryland. Ralph Crone Jr. leads volunteers from the Jefferson Ruritan Club aiding the project with Grange and the Jefferson Community Band and Band Auxiliary also involved. The club announced a March butcher sale at Koontz Milk Transportation and a sale of meat March 7 at the Jefferson Fire Hall. Norman Remsburg Luther Remsburg spoke on the January Ratitan National Convention in New Orleans. Rev. Bronson Staley, pastor of the Jefferson United Church of Christ, spoke on What the Preacher Is. The meeting adjourned with the flag pledge.
The Frederick County Blood program reports 216 pints donated at a Bloodmobile session at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Hood College and Walkersville High School led participation with 149 Hood students plus staff and 18 plus Walkersville juniors and seniors. 50 Hood donors deferred due to blood supply limits. Next drive docks at Mt. St. Mary’s College on March 12 from 1 to 5 30 p.m.
The Army Air Force Wage Board announced pay bumps for 691 Fort Detrick employees and 157 at Fort Ritchie. The schedule raises average wages about five cents an hour at Detrick and six cents at Ritchie, effective in the first pay period after March 10 per Representative Mathias.
An Ecuadorian sailor, Julio Luna, 28, received a hand transplant from a dead man in Guayaquil on Feb. 13. Doctors Wilson and Goldwyn, past Brigham consultants, said Luna could move fingers immediately and may travel to Boston for further treatment. The procedure, led by Dr. Roberto Gilbert, involved a donor forearm after a grenade injury.
Annapolis reports show Tidewater Fisheries commissioners earned about 205.43 dollars per meeting in 1961 and 343.64 in 1962 with annual salaries of 3000 dollars for four members and 4500 for the chairman. Senator Edward T. Hall said he will seek to strip fixed salaries and require per diem expenses for meetings.
WBAL Baltimore aired a brief local feature tonight at 7 10 p m showing inquiring reporter interviewing residents at a square corner for about two hours. The broadcast is part of The Hour evening newscast and covers day’s prevalent local news.
Baltimore City Council approves a civil rights ordinance banning racial discrimination in education, employment and public accommodations with a 12 to 3 vote. Equal housing provision was removed and exemptions granted to taverns beauty shops barber shops funeral homes cemeteries and related venues.
A 27-year-old Frederick Negro was sentenced to five years in the House of Correction by Judge Thomas M. Anderson for assault with intent to murder his estranged common-law wife, Ann Daluce. The stabbing occurred as she stood at a police call box in Frederick on December 15. Green claimed the injury was accidental. Daluce testified fear and an attempted escape led to the knife strike. Medical witnesses described a collapsed lung and internal bleeding. Daluce spent 11 days in hospital.
Former President Herbert Hoover, age 89, remains seriously ill in a New York hospital. A hospital room was reserved for him at the Waldorf Astoria as his family notes anemia from intestinal bleeding has weakened him since last June, following surgery last August for a cancerous tumor.
Bobby Baker refused to testify about duties as secretary to the Senate Democratic majority and was warned this could lead to contempt of Congress. The former page boy, who built wealth and power over two decades in the Senate, invoked the 5th Amendment to avoid answering questions and resisting subpoenaed documents.
In Princess Anne Maryland a midnight explosion and a burning cross intensified informal efforts to mediate restaurant segregation. A 15 member biracial committee led by Alexander Jones planned private talks with owners who refuse to serve Negroes. Jones said negotiations continue with meetings held and another reconvening planned. Funeral services were held in Munfordville Kentucky today for Dr William Rabon Howell professor emeritus of economics and sociology at Washington College.
Gilbert Lowenthal of Braddock Heights showcases a 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition medal bearing Francis Scott Key and James R. Randall likenesses. The medal’s history traces from Governor Goldsborough to Charles Russell and Nathan Lowenthal, later passing to Gilbert Lowenthal, Frederick merchant.
Sketchy reports say South Vietnamese forces opened a large operation 120 miles west of Saigon in the Cambodia border zone. The clash with Viet Cong was described as heavy and the heaviest since the lunar new year lull. The US Embassy seeks ideas from American officials in South Vietnam on tactics, methods, and organization to pressure the Viet Cong.
The Soviet Union announced it would support Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam. Tass said Soviets back the just liberation struggle and will provide assistance, though it did not specify the type. The agency warned the Soviet people cannot ignore new U.S. war actions in the region.
Fort Detrick offers seven land parcels totaling about 191 acres for five year leases starting April 1. Bids open March 23 at 2 p.m. in Baltimore. Land to be inspected 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by arrangement with Robert Riddlemoser. No price supported crops may be planted.
