Dispute fades as Stevens and McCarthy reach accord
Washington notes a surprising agreement between Secretary Stevens and Senator McCarthy ending a televised clash. Stevens will allow two generals to testify to McCarthy's Senate investigations about Maj. Irving Peress, a New York reserve dentist labeled a Fifth Amendment Communist. McCarthy’s charges are denied as baseless. Senate Democrats block a Bricker treaty session. Knowland calls it slowdown tactics, while Johnson disputes the need for night sessions. Warren's confirmation as chief justice appears likely. Eisenhower asks Congress to approve civilian pay raises and Taft-Hartley Act changes, including language shielding unions from individual member acts.
